As you browse the internet, you will undoubtedly see cookie policies popping up left and right, asking you to accept before you browse. Whether you're a web-based business or a brick and mortar with a vanity site, you will most likely need a cookie policy. But what is a cookie policy?

At its core, a cookie policy protects user's control over their personal data. Formally knows as General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), compliance with these rules is now a standard for businesses around the world. This European-based regulation took effect on May 25, 2018, and if your website is accessible to Europeans, you are required to implement these regulations.

Why Are Cookie Policies Important?

Almost every aspect of our lives revolves around data. Social media companies, banks, retailers, and governments - almost every service we use involves the collection and analysis of our personal data. Your name, address, credit card number are collected, analyzed and, perhaps most importantly, stored by organizations. Typically, the type of data considered personal include name, address, and photos. However, GDPR extends the definition of personal data to include your IP address and sensitive personal data such as genetic and biometric data, which could be processed to identify an individual. With GDPR, if you breach your user's data, they now have legal recourse. Under the terms of GDPR, not only do organizations have to ensure that personal data is gathered legally and under strict conditions, but those who collect and manage it are obliged to protect it from misuse and exploitation. Businesses must respect the rights of data owners or face penalties for not doing so. It is the business's responsibility to research and remain compliant with GDPR.

Here's an example of a generic cookie policy we use:

"By using this website, you agree to our use of cookies. We use cookies to provide you with a great experience and to help our website run effectively."

This cookie policy can be used on your site as long as you are GDPR compliant.
